Social housing and affordable homes have become a pressing need in the Egyptian capital, as almost half of Cairo's population of about 20 million lives in settlements with poor infrastructure despite a flurry of vacant homes across the country.
Cairo's population is set to grow by half a million this year, more than any other city in the world. That's according to a Euromonitor report released last week. This is adding to the pressure on its economy struggling to recover from six years of political turmoil. CGTN's Leslie Murungu has the details.

The city's metropolitan area is the largest in the Middle East and the Arab world, and the 15th-largest in the world, and is associated with ancient Egypt, as the famous Giza pyramid complex and the ancient city of Memphis are located in its geographical area. Located near the Nile Delta, Cairo has a population of 6.76 million spread over 453 square kilometers (175 sq mi), Cairo is by far the largest city in Egypt. An additional 9.5 million inhabitants live in close proximity to the city. Cairo, like many other mega-cities, suffers from high levels of pollution and traffic, as you will see in this video. The IMF says Egypt's economic reforms are on track. This paves the way for the country to receive another $2 billion in loans as part of a $12-billion bailout package. Egypt's economy has struggled to recover from the 2011 Arab Spring uprising. But as Maria Ramos reports, it also faces another major challenge; a rapidly growing population.

(1 Sep 2016) LEAD IN: Amman lacks the glamour of Dubai, the history of Cairo, and the nightlife of Beirut - but it does have the curious accolade of most expensive city in the Middle East. STORY-LINE: In a survey conducted this year by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Amman was ranked as the most expensive city in the region, and the 29th most expensive in the world. In the capital of what some visitors have termed 'The Hashemite Kingdom of Boredom', buildings stack up against each other like white Lego pieces as taxis race through the streets at alarmingly high speeds, leaving the stone city a blur from the backseat window. It has a reputation as the ugly duckling of the region - a boring metropolis devoid of the flair and culture of its counterparts. And now this new accolade...

Egypt' s Future Mega Project (2018 2030) The New Capital City will be bigger than New York City and Paris and will have the same size than the Greater Singapore Area. The proposed new capital of Egypt is a large-scale project announced by Egyptian housing minister Mostafa Madbouly at the Egypt Economic Development Conference on 13 March 2015. On 700 square kilometres total area, it would have a population of five million people, though it is estimated that the figure could rise to seven million. Officially, a major reason for the undertaking of the project was to relieve congestion in Cairo, which is already one of the world's most crowded cities, with the population of greater Cairo expected to double in the next few decades. The city is planned to consist of 21 residential distri...

There are now 25,000 registered In recent history, Egypt has been a temporary home for Sudanese fleeing violence in their country. There are now 25,000 registered Sudanese refugees in the north African country but it's estimated that between one and four million live there. While registered refugees have access to basic healthcare and education many say they are discriminated against because of the colour of their skin. They are also seen as a burden in a country where at least 43 percent of the population live on less than US$2 a day. This video short profiles the problems faced by single mother Victoria Achol Jaal. Her daughters have been abused and harassed, leaving her no choice but t...

Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt. Cairo is a world metropolis and tantamount to being an open-air museum. The Nile divides it in two and the centre of the city contains modern shops and office buildings in close proximity to medieval churches and ancient mosques. The Khan el-Khalili bazaar is like something from a bygone age and where the Orient combines with the Middle Ages, 'A Thousand And One Nights' amid Islamic Cairo. Goods inspired by pharaohs Tutankhamen and Nefertiti are in constant demand and it's where haggling is the norm. The bazaar is a colorful place with smoking hookahs, exotic carpets and musical instruments as well as a huge array of herbs and spices. Abu Serga is the city's oldest church and dates back to Fatima times. It was built on the ruins of an even o...

Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt. Cairo is a cultural melting pot and with a population of sixteen million it is the largest metropolis on the African continent. The Egyptian people refer to their capital city as Um Al Dunya, ‘Mother of the World’. The history of the Sankt Sergius Church dates back to Abu Serga in the 5th century A.D. Legend has it that it was built on the site where the Holy Family once sought refuge. Thus, the richly decorated church is a popular Christian place of pilgrimage and is situated in Fustat in the middle of Koptic, the oldest district in Cairo. The spacious Mamelucks Necropolis is unique within the Islamic world. Here, instead of conventional graves, entire houses were built for the dead. Within the necropolis the mosques and mausoleums of the Mam...
